Responsible lending
A short-term loan is a tool. Like any tool, it's brilliant for the right job and wrong for others.
When a cash bridge makes sense
snapcash is built for one situation: a short, temporary gap between an unexpected expense and money you know is coming. The geyser bursts a week before payday. School fees land early. You know exactly how you'll repay, and when.
When it doesn't
A short-term loan is the wrong tool if you're not certain you can repay in full on the date, if you'd be borrowing to cover existing debt repayments, or if the gap in your budget repeats every month. Rolling short-term credit month after month gets expensive fast — the caps limit each loan's cost, but they can't make repeated borrowing cheap. If that's where you are, a structured product (or debt counselling) will serve you far better, and we'd rather tell you that than lend to you.
What we do on our side
- We assess affordability on every application using your real bank statements — it's required by the National Credit Act, and we'd do it anyway.
- We decline applications the numbers don't support. A decline is protection, not punishment.
- We show the full cost before you apply, and it never changes after.
- We charge no early-settlement penalty — repaying early always saves you money.
A 60-second self-check before you apply
- Write down what's coming in this month and what must go out (rent, transport, food, electricity, existing debits).
- If the repayment fits comfortably in what's left, you're borrowing safely.
- If it only fits by skipping an essential, don't apply — talk to us or to one of the resources below instead.
If money is tight right now
You have real options, and acting early keeps all of them open:
- Talk to your creditors before you miss a payment. Most will arrange terms with someone who calls first.
- National Credit Regulator consumer line: 0860 627 627 — free guidance on your rights and on debt counselling.
- Debt counselling (debt review): a legal process under the NCA that restructures your repayments while protecting you from legal action. Any NCR-registered debt counsellor can assist.
- Credit Ombud: free dispute resolution for credit matters.
Spotting loan scams
Wherever you borrow — from us or anyone else — three rules keep you safe: a legitimate lender never asks for an upfront fee to "release" a loan; a legitimate lender displays an NCRCP registration number you can verify at ncr.org.za; and a legitimate lender never asks for your banking password. Anyone breaking these rules is not lending — they're stealing.
